Record-breaking popularity

  • Revenue for the video game industry hit a record-breaking $43.4 billion in 2018, up from $30.4 billion in 2016.
  • Video games make about as much money as the American film industry.
Trends driving the boom:

  • Growth in mobile game use
  • Old classics like Super Nintendo getting more and more popular as Millennials yearn for a piece of their past
  • Better technology — e.g. VR/AR– the VR market generated about $3.6 billion in revenues in 2018. By 2023, 37 million games consoles are expected to be using VR

Consumer Trends

Adults are playing video games.

  • 65% of American adults (more than 164 million) like playing video games
  • 93% of American households own a smartphone, half of them use it to play video games
  • The average gamer is 34 years old, 72% are 18 years or older
  • 60% of gamers are male

Millennials are serious gamers.

“Millennials, the first generation to grow up with widespread access to video games, are now adults between the ages of 22 and 38. Not expected to grow out of gaming any time soon, they are set to be the first generation of lifelong gamers.”

  • 2 in 3 Millennials in the U.S. play video games every month
  • 71% of Millennial gamers watch gaming video content or online videos about games, on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. They watch for nearly 6 hours each week

Adult gamers play for a variety of reasons.

  • They play games as a way to have fun, relax and connect with others
  • 79% say that video games provide mental stimulation
  • 78% say they are a form of relaxation and stress relief
  • 63% say they play games with others either online or in-person
