Even Smarter, Together.

Smart home brands team up to make life easier and safer.
Nearly 30 million U.S. households are expected to add smart home technology in the near future. Consumers’ growing desire for safety, greater control, and convenience, combined with lower-priced options will help fuel this growth. In 2020, brands will team up to offer solutions to security/privacy, compatibility, and cost concerns to help improve the connected home experience and ease barriers to purchase.

Retail & Consumer Trends

Big brands are playing nice together.

In late 2020, an “open-source smart home standard” called “Project Connected Home over IP” will be released through a partnership between Apple, Google, Amazon and the Zigbee Alliance that will ensure that all smart home devices will work together, regardless of the smartphone or voice assistant, with security guaranteed. Initial focus will be on safety devices, e.g. smoke alarms, door locks, smart plugs, security systems, and heating/air conditioning controls.
  • 54% of homes now own at least one smart home device. Most popular: smart speakers, interactive security systems and smart thermostats.
  • Smart home products with the highest demand are connected cameras, video doorbells, connected lightbulbs, and smart locks.
  • “Security” and “Safety” are top of mind for American consumers, ranking higher from 2010 to 2019 on a list of rising American values.
  • Consumer spending for smart home surveillance cameras is expected to reach over $9 billion by 2023.
