Getting Personal

Personalization is a persuasive driver in gifting.

Today’s world can feel so impersonal. Getting something personalized makes consumers feel special in a sea of sameness–the more personal a gift is, the more special it is. Whether it’s engraving a person’s name on a gift or letting consumers choose their own product color/style/design, personalization or co-creation in any form allows consumers to express their individuality and drives consumer engagement with brands.

Retail & Consumer Trends

Never underestimate the power of uniqueness.

  • Rewards program results prove that personalized products engage consumers and generate high reward redemption interest.
  • The personalized gifts market is expected to grow at a rate of 9% to reach $3.5 billion by 2022.
  • Non-photo personalized gifts have the largest market share at about 70%. The personalized photo gifts segment is expected to see high growth in the next 3 years.
  • Limited availability, uniqueness, and brand image drive the demand for specialized merchandise.
  • Personalized seasonal items, e.g. decorative mugs, handkerchiefs/bandanas, and plates, have seen a continuous spike in sales volume. Demand is also growing for watches, jewelry, clothing, key chains and electronic gadgets.
  • Consumers also purchase personalized gifts for themselves. “Self-gifting” is up 15% over the last five years. As a way to celebrate a personal achievement, or avoid disappointment during the holidays, over 50% of shoppers claimed to have self-gifted last holiday season.
