The Perfect Gift

Finding the perfect gift for someone can be a challenge, but hunting for unique, purposeful, crafted, and personalized gifts has never been easier, and may be more of a priority for shoppers this holiday season.

Consumers want to feel good about their purchases and want to share that “feel good” experience with others.  Expect more shoppers to be on a quest for luxury and handcrafted gifts, as well as gifts that are eco-friendly, support causes, and celebrate inclusivity and diversity, that will leave a lasting impression while helping to make the world a better place.

Marketplace and Consumer Trends

Shoppers are putting more thought and $ into holiday gifts.
  • Consumers are craving deeper in-person connections with loved ones this year and may be willing to spend more to see those emotional “WOW” reactions when opening personal and meaningful gifts with family and friends. 53% of consumers say they plan to buy less but make bigger, more considerate purchases for loved ones this year.
  • Luxury retail is expected to see a 93% growth from 2020 holiday sales and be up 56% from 2019. 50% of consumers say they have more money set aside for the holidays this year and 36% are planning to spend more.
  • The rising demand for handcrafted artisan-made goods is inspired by a desire to support small businesses and causes, promote sustainable goods, give back to community, and a greater appreciation for unique, quality made products. 63% of consumers say they will pay more for locally made items when it comes to gifts, and 38% say they plan to avoid big box retailers and instead look for items from retailers that feel more meaningful or purpose-driven.
  • An unprecedented number of startup businesses in the past year, combined with the growing popularity of social marketplaces will give consumers plenty of opportunities to find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts. 29% of shoppers are prioritizing exclusive, limited edition products, and 21% are making an effort to shop in pop-up stores that sell limited edition products for the holidays.
  • Social media as inspiration, and a more hybrid, online and brick-and-mortar, shopper journey, will facilitate discovery of new and unique gifts to give. 39% say online influencers are the best source of inspiration for gift ideas this year.
